Correctional Care Medicine
Correctional care medicine is characterized as a general re-structuring of your life. You work steady day hours Monday through Friday, with call shared among all physicians and midlevels at the unit. Support staff is excellent. Abulatory care with minimal minor surgery (no invasive). Doctors use only emergency meds they are comfortable with. Important to many doctors are the benefits that come with a permanent correctional position. These include but are not limited to the following: Medical Coverage, Dental, Vision Care, Term Life, Dependent Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Short Term Disability (Std), Long Term Disability (Ltd), Long Term Care, excellent retirement plans. flex spending accounts, about 27 days paid-time-off to start. Although duties vary, most prison jobs are like that of a family doctor. Emergencies are 911ed out and no invasive procedures.
Correctional Care Dentistry
Correctional care dentistry is generally characterized as dentistry at a comfortable pace, and not taking the job home with you. Patients per day usually 5-15 patients. You will be treating pain for the most part. Procedures include a majority of extractions and fillings. Some organizations do dentures. Multiple reports say that inmates are better patients than the general public. Correctional care is generally viewed as a rewarding experience by dentists. We have never had a temporary dentist refuse to return to correctional care. Many try it, like it and make it their new career. Hours are day hours Monday thru Friday. Typically it is your choice of 5 eight hour days or 4 ten hour days. Compensation for temporary prison work usually pays more than direct hire work. However permanent positions carry FULL BENEFITS for you and your family.
